The prehistoric complex Provadia-Solnitsata is the first prehistoric urban center on the European continent (4700 - 4350 BC). Solnitsata is located 6 km. east of the town of Provadia It consists of a production salt production center with ritual pits, an unfortified, and later fortified with stone walls settlement. It occupies an area of about 30 hectares. The emergence and development of the complex is directly related to the largest and actually the only deposit of rock salt in the Eastern Balkans, the so-called Mirovsko salt deposit, on which it is located. Almost throughout late prehistory, producers of table salt held a monopoly of the "white gold" over a vast region from the Danube River to the White Sea and from the Black Sea to the Central Balkans. Table salt became a strategic raw material - an engine of economic and social development. It also acquired the meaning of commodity money, which is why Provadia-Solnitsa served as the first “mint” in prehistoric Europe. The boiling of brine in ceramic vessels in Provadia-Solnitsa is the earliest recorded case in Europe of this technology for obtaining salt. The salt pan produced large quantities, which is why the inhabitants of the settlement were a target for numerous robbers and attackers. Its use in this place continued for more than a millennium. Here I would like to add that the development of the urban environment in the Bulgarian lands until 1396 was better than that of the cities in “western” Europe. In Bulgaria, the cities had sewage systems, unlike those in western countries, where there was no sewage system. An example of Heraclea Sintica - there they found a statue in the city sewer. We can boldly state that we Bulgarians are at the foundation of the development of European Civilization.
