Cherepish Monastery "Assumption of the Virgin Mary" is a Bulgarian Orthodox monastery in the Vratsa Diocese of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. It is located not far from the Cherepish train station in the Iskar Gorge, unique in its diversity of natural landmarks. Cherepish Monastery was founded during the reign of Tsar Ivan Shishman (1371 - 1393). During the years of the Bulgarian Renaissance, Cherepish Monastery was an important educational center. In 1797, Sophrony of Vratsa found refuge here. For years, the complex hosted classes at a priestly school, a theological institute, and the Sofia Theological Seminary. The emergence of the monastery is connected with the history of the medieval Koriten town, which existed in the nearby Ritlite area. Cherepish Monastery has been declared a cultural monument of national importance. In a prominent and high place in the monastery courtyard stands a majestic ossuary tower, which houses the remains of some of Botev's chetniks who died in the battle in Rashov Dol. This treasure was not only gold and jewels, but also weapons, ammunition and other necessary means with which the outlaws planned to organize an uprising against the enslavers. According to legend, the treasure was hidden deep in one of the caves surrounding the monastery. One of the most common stories tells of Voivode Valchan, who was one of the most respected and brave Haidutin. He and his band managed to collect a significant amount of gold and other valuables, which they hid in a cave near the Cherepish Monastery. The Cherepish Monastery was not only a refuge, but also a spiritual center for the Haidutite Over the years, many people have tried to find the hidden treasure of the Cherepish Monastery Despite many attempts, the treasure remains undiscovered, and the legend about it continues to live on and attract new treasure hunters.
